LAPTOP VS DESKTOP
LAPTOP Advantages
It’s true that laptops offer many advantages to desktops computers. However, like with everything, it all depends on who uses it and how they use it. In this article, we’re going to be discussing the benefits of both, and you can decide for yourself what is best.
Portability
Portability: One of the most significant advantages of laptops is their portability. Unlike desktop computers, laptops are designed to be lightweight and compact, making them easy to carry around. This portability allows users to work, study, or entertain themselves from virtually anywhere, whether it’s at home, in a coffee shop, during travel, or in a classroom.
What does portability mean?
Marques Brownlee discusses the invention of the Ultrabook laptop and how this relates to the portability side of it. Marques is one of my favourite tech reviewer that produces quality content in relation to everything tech.
Flexibility; What does this mean in modern times?
Flexibility: Laptops provide users with the flexibility to switch between various tasks and locations seamlessly. They can be used as both a primary work or study device and a personal entertainment system.
While the above is true in many ways, the idea of flexibility has expanded to include literally the morphing and expanding the of the shape of the laptop to increase the screen restate.
Have a look at the video below to demonstrate this. Lenovo has released a laptop with no keyboard that is fordable like a mobile phone. This is amazing and of a great benefit to some.
Some of the most flexable pcs on the market today are:
Google Bixelbook
Lenovo Flex
HP Spectre x360
Lenovo Yoga
Asus Zenbook fold OLED
Power efficiency
Power efficiency: Modern laptops are designed to be power-efficient, which means they consume less energy compared to desktop computers. This advantage not only helps to reduce electricity bills but also extends the battery life, allowing users to work or use their laptops for extended periods without needing to plug into a power source.
In relation to this, what is the balance between Wattage & performance. What can you do with minimum power consumption. The video below covers this topic in great detail.
Space-saving
Space-saving: Laptops are space-saving devices, making them ideal for people with limited desk space or those who prefer a clutter-free environment. They eliminate the need for bulky computer towers, external monitors, and various peripherals, as everything is integrated into a single compact unit. So what is that the thinnest and smallest laptop available today?
Performance
Performance: While laptops may not always match the raw processing power of high-end desktop computers, they have come a long way in terms of performance. Many laptops now offer impressive processing capabilities, sufficient RAM, and dedicated graphics cards, making them suitable for a wide range of tasks, including office work, content creation, multimedia consumption, and light gaming. With this in mind, what are the most powerful laptops available today?
Linus Tech tips explains this very well between performance and portability. It’s definitely worth a watch.
It’s now time to compare the desktop equivalent.
Advantages of desktop computers
Upgrade-ability
Upgrade-ability: Desktop PCs are easily upgrade-able. Users can replace or upgrade individual components like the processor, graphics card, memory, and storage, allowing them to extend the lifespan and keep up with the latest technology without having to buy a completely new system.
While the above statement is somehow correct, there are notable exceptions and this relates mainly to Apple computers, there desktop lineup such as mac mini, MAC studio and many of their current line of products. The user must upgrade at the point of purchase as they do not possess this ability to upgrade such things as mentioned above. Of course Apple computers including their laptop lineups were up-gradable at one point in time. This change happened when the arm processor was implemented in all new Apple PCs.
Louis Rossmann is a very famous YouTuber and a strong advocate of the rights to repair. He runs an independent repair shop in his local town. He explains the difficulties that he has been having in relation to repairing Apple products and especially relating to all things Apple PCs of modern times.
Power efficiency
The above computer is very power efficient, a desktop PC and very much portable, I do agree that not in the same level as a laptop. It is also expandable in terms of internal storage. Other classic upgrades cannot be made as the memory modules for example are soldered in place including the graphics card.
Customization
Customization: Unlike laptops or pre-built systems, desktop PCs allow users to customize every aspect of their computer, from the case design to the internal components. This level of customization allows users to tailor their PCs to meet their specific needs and preferences.
Martina from NerdForge is amazing. She has designed a custom case for Linus Tech tips. This is only possible in PCs due to access To the many peripherals including power systems, to light up items that need power. This is much more difficult to achieve with Apple Mac products. It has to be seen to be believed on how brilliant Martina is. It’s definitely worth a watch to see the process in action.
Performance
When power and money is not an issue, this is what is possible to purchase as a civilian. The PC below is worth over €35,000 and is extremely power hungry. The performance is amazing and this is what you pay for.
